I'm not a twitcher - haven't the patience - but I do stop sometimes and just birdwatch. If you're carrrying a camera everyone thinks you're a twitcher, of course, and asks questions. I answer as best I can and, if there's a signal, Google what I can't. I don't tell them I'm just standing here wondering if that duck's thinking "I think I'll just stand here in the late November afternoon gold until darkness falls". I don't mention stopping by a pond on a late autumnal afternoon brings to mind the poem by Robert Frost, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
I'm pretty sure it's a mallard, I say. They smile and walk on. I take another shot.
